Happy Banned Books Week - 9/27 thru 10/3

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community -- librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types -- in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

Douglas Library held its Third Annual Banned Books Read Aloud event today. Many faculty, staff and students took part by reading excerpts from their favorite banned and challenged titles. The staff of Douglas Library wishes to thank everyone who participated - readers and audience - because it is important that we openly exercise our right to read what we choose.

Banned Books Week ends successfully!

I’m pleased to report that the Second Annual Banned Books Week Read Aloud held 9/24/14 in Lobby 2 was a wonderful success, with more than 50 in attendance.  Many thanks go out to so many folks who contributed by speaking about censorship, sharing readings from favorite banned and challenged books, and setting up the space for us:

Student readers:  Cinthya Rondoy, Darlene Dowd, Lori Connelly, Christine Toney, Sarah Prince and Colleen Twomey-Mulvey

Student and faculty readers who haven’t done so already, please stop into the library and pick up your Certificate of Participation.
