Focus group participants needed - help design your library of the future!

Great news!  CCC is beginning to plan for a new learning commons in the existing Douglas Library space.  The learning commons will host tutoring and the library, and perhaps other support services.  Let us know what you think - participate in a focus group.  You'll be given a chance to let us know what currently works and what doesn't, what you need to be successful, and what you'd like to see in your library of the future.

Dates and times will depend on participant availability, so sign up soon to be a part of the conversation.  Did we mention there will be food?

You might wonder, "What is a learning commons?"  According to Wikipedia, "Learning commons, also known as scholars' commons, information commons or digital commons, are learning spaces, similar to libraries and classrooms that share space for information technology, remote or online education, tutoring, collaboration, content creation, meetings and reading or study."

Do you have your textbooks?

It's the third week of classes and most likely your courses are in full swing...but are you fully prepared?  Circumstances sometimes get in the way of our successes, and Douglas Library and your instructors want to help you be successful.

If you don't have all of your textbooks - can't afford them, didn't order them on time, didn't think you'd need them - and now you find you do, why not check with the library to see if your textbook is on course reserve?

Course reserve is a service provided by the library in collaboration with several campus instructors that makes many (not all) textbooks available for on-campus, in-library use for two hours at a time.  Some instructors also use the course reserve service to provide access to DVDs and other materials viewed in class.  This can be helpful for many reasons - perhaps you have downtime between classes and wish to catch up on some reading, or you left your book home and you need to work on homework.  Maybe you missed a lecture that included a DVD you are required to watch on your own time.  A copy of the textbook and other items may be available to borrow for use in the library.

**Please note, to ensure course materials are available to all students whenever the library is open, course reserve items cannot be borrowed for use outside of the library (i.e. cannot take to class or home).

Also, course reserves is at the discretion of the instructor.  The library may not have all textbooks in use during the semester.  If you find your textbook is not on course reserve, we recommend you speak with your instructor to see if s/he has a copy of the textbook available for placement on course reserve.

We are located on the 2nd floor of the Moore Building, and are open Monday - Thursday 8 am to 6 pm and Friday 8 am to 4 pm.

What can you do at the library?

·         Borrow books & DVDs with your Clinton ID

·         Get in-person research assistance from a librarian

·         Study in our Quiet or Group Study rooms

·         Use computers for coursework (secure wireless is also available if you bring your own device)

·         Use the KIC scanner or photocopier

·         Borrow a graphing calculator for MAT 103 or higher

·         Use course reserves textbooks (we have several but not all)

·         Leave a book or take a book at our Book Exchange located in the library hallway

Not on campus often?  Many library resources and services are available to you wherever you are!

Poetry Read Aloud Cancelled

The Poetry Read Aloud scheduled for 4/27 has been cancelled due to a lack of participants.  Thank you to those who volunteered. 

New Printer in Library!

Douglas Library is pleased to announce we have a new printer for students.  Students can print in color or black/white.  Stapling is now available through the new printer as well. 

Students logged into library PCs will default to print to the new printer in black/white.  In order to access color printing go to File -> Print and select M207_MFP_C (c for color) from the dropdown menu. 

For color or black/white printing:

To print on one side of the paper, go to File -> Print and click on Print on Both Sides to select your option to Print One Sided. 

To staple documents, go to File -> Print and click on No Staples to view your options for stapling.


If the new printer is busy, you can still send documents to M207 (backup printer in library).  The HP 4610 color printer is no longer available.

Finding Full Text in ScienceDirect

Several questions have come up regarding results retrieved in Elsevier ScienceDirect database.  While it appears we have access to every article retrieved in a search of this database, this is not the case.  Here's a little information to help you distinguish whether or not an item is available in full text in Elsevier ScienceDirect.

In the results displayed below, you'll notice three articles are listed and all show the traditional red Adobe PDF icon just below the article, so it appears we have access to all three in full text.  However, to the right there are three arrows pointing to three different colored icons.  Each icon color represents whether or not we have access to the article.

• White means we only have access to the abstract; we do not have access to this article in full text.  
• Green means we have access to this article through our subscription to ScienceDirect.
• Orange means we have access to this article through Elsevier Open Access publishing.

Welcome Students - Spring 2016

A new semester is upon us and classes will begin shortly.  Stop into the library for a tour of our collections, a demo on how to use the databases, or assistance in citing your sources.  We're here to help and happy to do so!

We have many new movies and books for you this semester.  Stop in and check them out.  Once classes begin, Douglas Library will be open Monday - Thursday 8AM - 6PM and Friday from 8AM - 4PM.  The library is closed on weekends and most major holidays.  Check our website for details. 

Remember, you'll need your school ID to borrow library materials.  Please stop into the FSA Office in 112M and get your student ID if you haven't done so already.  With your student ID, you also have borrowing privileges at Plattsburgh State.  Feel free to visit Feinberg Library if you need a place to study or a computer when Douglas Library is closed.

If the library is full, 461M is now a dedicated student computer lab.  Also, any computer classroom in Moore or Stafford that is not scheduled for a class is open to students as long as the room is free.  Check the schedule on the door for availability. 

If you are registered for MAT 103 or higher and need a graphing calculator, the library may be able to help. More details about calculator loans can be found on our website.

Happy Banned Books Week - 9/27 thru 10/3

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community -- librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types -- in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

Douglas Library held its Third Annual Banned Books Read Aloud event today. Many faculty, staff and students took part by reading excerpts from their favorite banned and challenged titles. The staff of Douglas Library wishes to thank everyone who participated - readers and audience - because it is important that we openly exercise our right to read what we choose.

The staff of Douglas Library at Clinton Community College welcome you (or welcome you back).  Fall 2015 promises to be full of many new faces, places and services across campus.  Stop into the library if you have any questions, or just to get acquainted.  Be sure to pick up your student ID card if you haven't already, as you'll need this to borrow library materials, including books, DVDs and calculators.

Fall 2015 - Coming Soon!

Douglas Library has been open over the summer and staff have been busy with inventory, space reorganization, and upgrades to library services.  Patrons will be introduced to new spaces and services upon returning to campus.  The fall semester is near, with online classes beginning on August 17th, and in-person classes meeting the week of August 24th.  Be sure to get your student ID from the FSA office so you can borrow library materials.  If you have overdue library materials, please return them at your earliest convenience.  We hope you enjoyed your summer.  See you soon! 

Only four weeks left

It's hard to believe we are closing in on the end of the semester.  Please remember to return library materials no later than May 15th at 4PM to avoid having a hold placed on your account.  Students with a calculator currently signed out need to return it by May 15th, even if you plan to take another math course in the future.  Calculator loans are only good for the current semester.  Please visit the Calculator Loan information page for details.    

For those who need a calculator for a summer math course (MAT 103 or higher), please visit the library circulation desk anytime after May 26th.  A current student ID is required to borrow any library materials.  All summer calculator loans will be due back by July 29th.
