Human Google?

Recently, the New York Public Library was covered by CBS This Morning, specifically discussing the reference service provided to New Yorkers and beyond.  Librarians were referred to as, "the Human Google" and were said to be "the most-trusted source" despite the speed and ease of online searching.  About 2.5 million people visit the NYPL each year, and the Ask Desk, NYPL's ready reference service, fields about 300 inquiries each day, via phone, email, chat and more.

Roughly five hours up the Northway from the NYPL, the librarians of Douglas Library provide the same kind of service, just on a much smaller scale.  Did you know the librarians here at Clinton answer reference questions every day?  Whether at the reference desk providing answers in-person, via telephone, or email, or through our participation in the Ask Us 24/7 chat reference cooperative, our three staff librarians are your "Human Google" and we're happy to help.

Should you need assistance but can't come to the library?  Feel free to use the Ask Us 24/7 chat reference service.  Actually, feel free to use the service even if you CAN come to the library.  You can find a link to it on most library web pages (see icon below).  Click on the icon and you'll be connected with a live person - a real librarian, 24 hours/day, 365 days/yr.

While we participate in the chat service by covering two hours each week, please note that you probably won't be chatting with a Douglas Library librarian, as the service is staffed by hundreds of librarians from institutions all across the United States.  Rest assured, we've provided them information about our library and services, and given them access to our resources, so they should be able to assist you, almost as well as one of us.  ;-)

Access to New York Times & Wall Street Journal

Did you know you have access to articles in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal through the library?

From the library home page, click on eJournals by Title in the left menu bar.  In the Full Text Finder search box, type the title of the paper you are interested in and click Search (you can search any newspaper or journal here).  Find the title in the results list and click on the plus sign next to the link to open a list of databases providing Full Text Access.  You should see something like this:

New York Times
  • Academic OneFile 01/01/1985 - present
  • Business Insights: Essentials 01/01/1985 - present
  • Expanded Academic ASAP 01/01/1985 - present
  • General OneFile 01/01/1985 - present
  • InfoTrac Newsstand 01/01/1985 - present
  • Opposing Viewpoints In Context 01/01/1985 - present
  • Popular Magazines 01/01/1985 - present
  • ProQuest Newsstand National Newspapers Premier 06/01/1980 - present

Wall Street Journal (eastern edition)
  • ABI/INFORM Complete 01/02/1984 - present
  • ProQuest Health Management 01/02/1984 - present
  • ProQuest Newsstand National Newspapers Premier 01/02/1984 - present

Of the databases listed, check coverage dates for a range that says "present" (in this case all of them do, but this is not always the case).  Click on the database option that provides the coverage range you need.  Each interface is a little different (Gale vs. ProQuest vs. EBSCO), but each should offer you the option to pick the date of the paper you are interested in and read the articles of the day.

Note:  Some databases provide full text coverage up to and including the current day while others provide full text coverage up to and including the previous day.  Occasionally some articles may not be included in the database even though they appeared in the hard copy paper.  Each of these situations is due to licensing between the database vendor and the publisher; Douglas Library has no control over content coverage.

Ask Us 24/7 Chat Reference

New for Spring 2011: Staff of Douglas Library have joined the Ask Us 24/7 Online Reference Service. Patrons can chat with a librarian anytime day or night and get their reference questions answered. Access the service by clicking on the Ask Us 24/7 logo on the library homepage.

Please note you may not be chatting with a librarian from Clinton Community College when you use the service, however our colleagues are ready, willing and able to help you in our absence. Check it out!
