Finding Full Text in ScienceDirect

Several questions have come up regarding results retrieved in Elsevier ScienceDirect database.  While it appears we have access to every article retrieved in a search of this database, this is not the case.  Here's a little information to help you distinguish whether or not an item is available in full text in Elsevier ScienceDirect.

In the results displayed below, you'll notice three articles are listed and all show the traditional red Adobe PDF icon just below the article, so it appears we have access to all three in full text.  However, to the right there are three arrows pointing to three different colored icons.  Each icon color represents whether or not we have access to the article.

  • White means we only have access to the abstract; we do not have access to this article in full text.
  • Green means we have access to this article through our subscription to ScienceDirect.
  • Orange means we have access to this article through Elsevier Open Access publishing.
For more information on this, please visit Elsevier's Help Page and search for "determining your access."

FAQ - Why can't I access the databases using my laptop on campus?

Students using their own wireless devices (laptop, tablet, etc.) to access the Internet using the college's Wi-Fi will not be able to pass through our proxy server as they would if they were using a hard-wired device.  Therefore, the browser will appear to "hang" and will not load the page.

There is a solution:

If you are using your own device to search databases while on campus, you will need to edit the URL to access the databases.  This is due to campus firewall settings.

Here is the step by step process to do so, using Academic Search Complete as an example:

1.  Hover over the link to the database and right-click to open menu
2.  Select Copy Link Location
3.  Open new browser tab/window
4.  Paste link into browser address bar:
http://ezproxy.clinton.edu:2048/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?authtype=ip,uid&profile=ehost&defaultdb=a9h
5.  DO NOT HIT ENTER
6.  Highlight the entire proxy URL and equal sign (=) :   http://ezproxy.clinton.edu:2048/login?url=
7.  Hit DELETE key.
8.  Press ENTER key - URL that remains should take you to the database

How to Use Google Scholar

Google Scholar is a great tool for searching across multiple Douglas Library resources for full text materials. Think of this as one of our many databases, and using it will be a piece of cake!

Remember: To use Google Scholar to access Douglas Library materials, you must navigate to Google Scholar from our Databases page and log in using your CCC username and password.

Steps to using Google Scholar:

1. From the Douglas Library homepage, click on the Databases link.
2. Locate Google Scholar in the Databases A-Z list.
3. Enter your username and password at the EZproxy login page. (You may not see this if you have already logged in to use other library databases.)
4. Once you log in you will arrive at the Google Scholar search page.
5. From here, you can search using the basic interface or you can click on Advanced Scholar Search to further limit your results.
6. Once you submit your search terms, you will retrieve a results list.
7. Within this list, materials marked "Full-text @ Clinton CC" in the right side margin of the page are available to you.
